Athletes vs. Cancer provides support and resources for families affected by youth and young adult cancer.

Matt founded Athletes vs. Cancer in honor of his mother, Ann Catherine Barnes who passed away twenty-six days following her diagnosis of Stage 4 cancer in November of 2007. Mrs. Barnes' passing was abrupt and devastating to her family and friends, which led Matt to wanting to prevent others from losing their loved ones without having the opportunity to receive the knowledge and resources that can assist in early detection and proper treatment.

In charitable efforts to assist as many patients and survivors as possible, Athletes vs. Cancer has teamed up with the UCLA Medical Center, Teen Cancer America, CoachArt and Children's Hospital of Los Angeles to provide monetary donations or experiences hosted by Matt, that allowed patients to enjoy the company of fellow peer-patients outside of the medical facilities (e.g., Clippers games, Dodgers games, basketball clinics and art shows).

In the Fall 2016, Athletes vs. Cancer will award two high school Seniors that have been touched by cancer and pursuing the collegiate level of education, with an academic scholarship.
